Animal rights group creates "hit list" of universities conducting research on monkeys

Animal rights activists are using freedom of information laws to draw
up a 'hit list' of universities which conduct research on monkeys

Letters sent to six universities requesting details of experiments
involving primates have sparked panic among researchers.

The revelation raises the spectre of extremists widening their focus
beyond Oxford University where militants are waging a terror campaign
to derail a planned £20million animal research facility.

USDA Seeking**** Public Comments**** on IDA's Elephant Petition by Dec 11 plus **** poll*****  (USA)

From savezooelephants.com

USDA Seeking **** Public Comments**** on IDA's Elephant Petition by Dec 11 plus **** poll***** (elephants are losing)

USDA Seeking Public Comments on IDA's Elephant Petition
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is currently seeking public comments on space and living conditions for captive elephants in the U.S. This important development is a direct result of IDA's citizen's petition seeking enforcement of the federal Animal Welfare Act (AWA) at zoos and circuses, where elephants are suffering due to inadequate space, unnatural conditions, lack of exercise and social deprivation.

What You Should Say

Please tell the USDA that you support all efforts to dramatically improve conditions for captive elephants in this country, including enforcing existing adequate space requirements under the Animal Welfare Act (as requested in the IDA Citizens Petition) and creating tough new standards that:

• Require exhibitors of elephants to provide large, naturalistic, climate-appropriate environments similar to those at The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee and the PAWS sanctuary in California. These two refuges provide hundreds to thousands of acres over which elephants can roam, socialize and maintain their health.
• Prohibit the use of bullhooks, chains, electric shock devices and other instruments of force against elephants.

Why Change is Needed

The reasons why the USDA must take action include:

1. Zoos and circuses are not giving elephants the conditions they require for their health and well-being.

2. The Animal Welfare Act requires that zoos and circuses provide elephants with adequate space. Zoos are not meeting this requirement.

3. Elephants are big animals who need big spaces. But in too many zoos and circuses they suffer from lack of space, unnatural conditions and social deprivation that eventually cause a range of preventable ailments -- from painful arthritis and foot disease to reproductive and digestive disorders to neurotic behaviors like swaying and head bobbing.

4. Many zoos lock their elephants in barn stalls for at least 12 hours a day when the zoo is closed. And, in northern zoos, elephants are confined indoors for extended periods during the cold winter months.

5. Additionally, circuses and many zoos control their elephants through force, domination and aggressive use of the bull hook and prolonged chaining. These methods cause constant stress as well as physical and psychological injury to elephants.

6. Because of their intelligence, complexity and unique social and physical needs, elephants suffer in small, unchallenging zoo environments. Because of these unique qualities and complex needs, elephants deserve much, much higher standards than the ones that currently exist.

It is critical that the letters are personalized and in the writer's own words. Please feel free to talk about your personal experience seeing elephants in zoos and/or circuses, your profession, whether you are a parent who wants his or her children to be properly educated, etc. A personalized letter will have much more impact than a form letter.

DawnWatch: COK airs "A Side of Truth" on MTV -- November, 2006 (US)

DawnWatch generally encourages animal friendly media by asking subscribers to stay in touch with the media, letting them know how much we appreciate coverage of animal issues.  The terrific grass-roots group Compassion Over Killing, however, also makes its own media messages, and has carefully choosing the perfect target market. The group has produced a 30-second commercial designed for MTV. They call it "A Side Of Truth." You can watch it on line at
http://www.cok.net/camp/mtv/

As the website describes:
"In this hard-hitting ad, a young woman is ordering food from a drive thru when she is forced to face the painful and cruel reality of typical dietary choices-from the mother pig in a gestation crate who can't turn around to the hens crammed inside wire battery cages to the calf in a veal stall who can barely move. As she speeds away in horror, viewers are directed to TryVeg.com where they can learn more about the routine miseries endured by animals on factory farms as well as order COK's free Vegetarian Starter Guide to help them transition to an animal-friendly diet. "

COK explains:
"By targeting MTV's teen and young adult viewing audience, we're able to get the animals' message directly to those shown by research to be the most receptive to vegetarian eating. And for just pennies per impression, our ads altogether have been viewed more than 12 million times in 62 cities nationwide.  As a result of our campaign, hits to our website TryVeg.com skyrocketed and requests for our free Vegetarian Starter Guide have reached record numbers."

But COK needs our help. They tell us:

"Our ability to blanket the MTV airwaves with a message of compassion depends largely on the kindness of our members. Over the last three years, our campaign has grown significantly thanks to your help, and we're excited to announce that this season, we're taking it to the next level.  Using the same cost-efficient criteria as always, our fall 2006 advertising blitz is the most ambitious yet- we'll be reaching out to a national audience for the first time! Starting in early November, more than 21 million Comcast cable subscribers in hundreds of cities from coast to coast will be served 'A Side of Truth.'

"'Please help us ensure the success of this powerful advertising campaign!

"We're currently raising funds to keep this ad on the air as long as possible-and we just received an extremely generous pledge of $25,000 if we can match that amount with contributions from supporters like you. In other words, every dollar you contribute today towards our MTV commercial campaign will be doubled-up to $25,000!"

Please check out the commercial and forward it to your friends. And I think you will be moved to contribute to this wonderfullly worthwhile campaign. If you are, you can do that on line at the URL above, or by sending a check to

AETA THREATENS ANIMAL ACTIVISTS (US)

The National Lawyers Guild, which defends activists against First Amendment violations, “strongly opposes the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act,” which was unanimously approved as S. 3880 by the U.S. Senate on September 29th. If the measure is enacted into law, any activity causing an “animal enterprise” business to suffer a profit loss, including peaceful protests and media campaigns, could be considered a terrorist act. The Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act was drafted by the lobbyist group American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), in association with the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance. ALEC, which has the support of over 300 large corporations, had a hand in introducing over 3,100 pieces of legislation in the 1999/2000 session, of which over 450 were enacted, all benefiting corporations.

The Equal Justice Alliance, a national coalition of social advocacy organizations, has formed to stop the measure in the U.S. House of Representatives when Congress reconvenes on November 13th. The Alliances website explains the legislation and its opposition to it: http://www.noaeta.org/home.htm

Navratilova protests "gay sheep" research (US)

published Friday, November 3, 2006

Tennis icon Martina Navratilova has condemned hormone-altering
experiments on "gay sheep" at Oregon State University and Oregon
Health and Science University.
The research seeks to manipulate the sheep's sexual preferences and
make them heterosexual. The tests are funded by taxpayers through
the year 2008.

In letters faxed to the presidents of both universities, Navratilova
writes:

"How can it be that, in the year 2006, a major university would host
such homophobic and cruel experiments? . . . I respectfully ask that
you pull the plug on this appalling and misguided research.

"Surely you can find a way to redirect the millions of public tax
dollars that are being wasted on these experiments to a more
fruitful venture -- perhaps by funding a gay and lesbian community
center to foster dialogue and acceptance for people of all sexual
preferences?"

According to the animal rights group PETA, Oregon Health and Science
University experimenter Charles Roselli is medicating sheep to
prevent the actions of hormones in their fetal brains.

Roselli is also dissecting the brains of "male-oriented"
(homosexual) rams in order to find the hormonal mechanisms behind
homosexual tendencies. Once found, he hopes to change them.

According to the grant applications, the experimenters plan to
extrapolate the test results to humans -- with the insidious
implication that homosexuality in people can be "cured."

Navratilova -- who won nine Wimbledon women's singles championships
before her retirement this year and who, with a record 167 titles in
singles and 174 in doubles, holds more overall tennis titles than
any player in history -- adds:

"For the sake of the animals who will die unnecessarily in these
experiments and for the many gays and lesbians who stand to be
deeply offended by the social implications of these tests, I ask
that you please end these studies at once."

-->National Lawyers Guild Opposes Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act

-->
WASHINGTON - October 30 - The National Lawyers Guild strongly opposes the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act (H.R. 4239/S. 3880 (as amended and passed by the Senate)). On September 29, the U.S. Senate unanimously approved S. 3880, the Senate version of the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act (AETA). If enacted into law, the Act could define as a terrorist act any activity causing a business classified as an "animal enterprise" to suffer a profit loss—even if such financial decline is caused by peaceful protests, boycotts, media campaigns or leafleting.

The AETA contains vague and overbroad language that may be read to criminalize legitimate activities, such as an email campaign protesting actions of a corporation. Furthermore, laws already exist to penalize the kind of activities this Act targets, such as the 1992 Animal Enterprise Protection Act. The AETA will increase the likelihood of misguided prosecutions, and will also serve as a deterrent to a host of lawful, First Amendment protected activities. Guild President Marjorie Cohn said, "The AETA could lead to the prosecution of undercover investigators, whistle-blowers and other activists as 'terrorists.' It defines 'economic damage' as including 'the loss of profits.' Such broad language puts all activists at risk; those activists who aren't prosecuted under the AETA will still feel the chilling effect of its 'terrorist' language."

The National Lawyers Guild has documented the government's crackdown on First Amendment protected activities it its 2004 report "The Assault on Free Speech, Public Assembly, and Dissent." In addition to enacting a host of unconstitutional practices at large rallies and demonstrations, the government is labeling certain activist activities as "terrorist" related, and levying harsher penalties for actions that are associated with political messages.

"The government is engaging in Orwellian newspeak by labeling activists as terrorists. It's wrong to enact legislation that punishes the same action more severely if it is committed for political reasons. The AETA is a misguided and dangerous piece of legislation," said Guild Executive Director Heidi Boghosian.

The AETA was created by the lobbyist group American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) in association with the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance. ALEC has the support of over 300 large corporations, including those in the tobacco, petroleum, pharmaceutical and transportation areas. It works with right-wing entities such as the NRA, the Family Research Council and the Koch, Scaife, Bradley and Heritage Foundations to influence legislation to benefit its big business members and contributors. In 1999/2000 ALEC legislators introduced over 3,100 pieces of legislation, of which over 450 were enacted, all benefiting corporations.

The Guild was founded in 1937 as an alternative to the American Bar Association which excluded people of color. The Guild has a long history of representing individuals whose rights have been violated by governments in the U.S. and abroad. Its highly-respected Legal Observer program monitors First Amendment violations and defends activists around the country.

Nadeem and Saud had spotted two saperas near this temple an evening
before i.e on 27th. Nadeem and Rajeev surveyed the temple and its
premises and decided to do the raid the next day as the saperas
could not be seen around.

Next evening Nadeem, Saud, Vikas, Ansar and Rajeev went to the spot
at around 5:30 pm. Since a raid was conducted at the same place last
year on 2nd Oct it was thought that Nadeem, Saud and Rajeev may be
recognizable. So Ansar and Vikas were sent to the temple to confirm
whether the saperas were present and which they did. Nadeem called
the police and a PCR arrived in about 25 minutes.

Meanwhile Vikas and Ansar were keeping and eye on the saperas.
Nadeem, Saud, Rajeev and the police people entered the temple.
On seeing the police vehile the saperas had disappeared!! and the
darkness helped them as it was around 7 by this time. But the
watchful eye of Vikas and Ansar had seen where the saperas had hid
the 'pitaras'. 5 pitaras and one bag containing a sand boa were
seized. 'Potlies' of saperas clothes and a bottle of 'alcohol' were
left there for their use. The snakes were taken to the Paharganj
police station where they were identified and counted. The details
are as follows

Urge Officials to Spare Virginia's Bears
The Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is getting set to hold a cruel hunt in which as many as twenty bears will be killed in the name of recreation. This hunt is not taking place to curb overpopulation, nor is it to protect members of the public. It is simply to appease hunters' blood thirst and it's just not right.

According to The Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge and Nansemond National Wildlife Refuge Final Comprehensive Conservation Plan, http://www.chesapeake.va.us/services/citizen_info/pdf/GDSNWRfinalCCP8-2-06.pdf  "The main purpose of the hunt is to add a priority wildlife-dependent recreational opportunity for the public. There are limited public hunting opportunities in southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. By implementing a bear hunt an additional 200 hunter days will be provided to the area."

Please urge The Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge and Virginia Governor Timothy Kaine to call off the hunt. Also, please tell a friend and take a moment to sign our petition http://ga0.org/campaign/vabearpetition to Governor Kaine.

Pictures of the Japanese Antarctic whaling fleet ready to embark + action item

To all opposed to whaling:

The Japanese Antarctic whaling fleet is within days of embarking again to rape the Southern Ocean, under the pretext of "scientific research".

In spite of the glut of whale meat in cold storage, Japan inexplicably doubled the Minke whale quota from 440 per year to almost 900 two years ago, and added 50 fin whales and 50 humpback whales to the roster.

In spite of the fact that whale meat is overloaded with mercury (over 20X the legal limit set by the Japanese government itself), PCB and dioxin (the most potent carcinogen known to science), the whale meat industry is labeling whale meat as "health food", and the Japanese government is feeding whale meat to elementary school children in their lunch program, in its effort to rejuvenate the whaling and whale meat industries.

Same time last year (November 2005), Anthony Marr, with Canadian activist Bruce Foerster, conducted an anti-whaling mission at Shimonoseki, Japan, where the Japanese Antarctic whaling fleet was assembled.  Among other things, Anthony took dozens of pictures of the fleet as well as the whale meat market.  Moments after he photographed the factory ship at its restricted dock, the one with "RESEARCH" painted on its hull (one of the most blatant lies in recent history), he was interrogated by two plain-clothe agents for close to two hours.  The fleet departed on November 8 and was subsequently intercepted by the Farley Mowat of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society on the high seas.

In both 2004 and 2005, Anthony Marr also went to Taiji, Japan, where thousands of dolphins are slaughtered every year for meat and hundreds are captured for entertainment, and where the infamous "Whale Museum", more appropriately, the Whaling Museum, in which whale and dolphin meat are sold, is located.

To see the pictures of the whaling fleet at Shimonoseki close-up, and the inside of the Whale Museum at Taiji, and the whale meat for sale throughout Japan, and the restaurant menus featuring whale cuisine, click on the following link:

Anthony Marr calls for the following action:

1.  Write to the Japanese consulate or embassy in your city, expressing your disapproval of Japanese whaling, and that you will not visit Japan nor purchase Japanese products until the whaling is terminated.  (You can find basic information aboutJapanese whaling in the above link.)

2.  Write to the Japanese car dealers and electronic outlets in your city to say that, with all due respect to the quality of their products, you will not be purchasing anything Japanese for as long as Japanese whaling persists.

This strategy is to pit a vast array of major Japanese manufacturers and industries against the relatively small whaling and whale meat industries.  If we all do it, and spread the message far and wide, there should be no contest.

For the whales.

Subject: [alqld] Western Australia vet school eliminates terminal surgeries

Jul. 2006
Western Australian vet school eliminates terminal surgeries

For the first time, in Semester II, 2006, Western Australia’s AVMA-accredited Murdoch University has completely eliminated some of its core terminal veterinary surgical teaching laboratories. Thanks to the ongoing efforts of student conscientious objectors over several years, certain faculty members have been stimulated to introduce an RSPCA animal shelter sterilisation program. Instead of participating in the traditional surgical laboratories in which pigs and sheep were killed, this semester all students neutered shelter animals instead.

Unsurprisingly, the program is very popular with students, who experience the satisfaction of preventing unnecessary deaths through pet overpopulation, rather than causing them during their surgical training; and who also feel they are gaining superior and more realistic surgical experience. Even some faculty members are of the opinion that the students are becoming better surgeons.

Unfortunately the school does not currently appear to have an educational memorial (body donation) program for the ethical sourcing of cadavers for anatomy, clinical skills and surgical training, nor any surgical training models to speak of. It is hoped by this author that these basic precursors to live animal surgeries may be introduced in the future, following additional student activism.

At this stage there is no confirmation that the program, which is being trialed, will continue. Unsurprisingly, certain faculty appear to be hoping the program will fail, allowing a return to the traditional terminal surgical laboratories. However, the considerable success of the program so far make it more likely the program will be continued, and may even replace the remaining terminal surgical laboratories in Semester I of the 4th year core surgical course.

Of Australia’s three other established veterinary schools, the University of Sydney veterinary school (which is the other AVMA-accredited Australian school), completely eliminated all terminal surgical labs, established a body donation program, and introduced a policy allowing student conscientious objection in 2000, stimulated by student activist Dr Lucy Fish, now practicing in London.

STREAKER'S BLUE BELTER

Nov 7 - A NUDE animal liberationist has been ejected from Sydney's
Randwick racecourse and will face court for offensive behaviour.

The woman, in her thirties, streaked across the racecourse at 2pm "in
some sort of anti-horse racing protest," Maroubra Police Inspector
Eddie Bosch said.

"The woman was streaking around the racecourse area and was taken into
custody by police where she was clothed and given a field court
attendance notice for offensive behaviour," Insp Bosch said.

The woman - protesting at the race won by Delta Blues, and
appropriately featuring Headturner and (un)Zipping - had
HorseRacingKills.org written on her in red paint.

A statement issued by Animal Liberation NSW said the stunt was aimed
at drawing attention to what it said was the widespread mistreatment
of racehorses and rejected racehorses.

The action was part of a national campaign and came as Australians
gathered at Randwick and around Australia ahead of the Melbourne Cup,
the nation's most famous race.

The Animal Liberation NSW statement said 18,000 foals were bred by the
racing industry but 70 per cent of those were rejected.

"Most of the rejects will be slaughtered or abandoned to an existence
of neglect and suffering," the statement said.

"Most horses are confined to a stall for up to 22 hours a day."

It said 90 per cent of race horses suffered ulcers and bleeding in the
lungs as a result of stress and an unnatural feeding regime.

The arrested woman is due to appear at Waverley Local Court on
November 22.

GENERATION XL

ABUSE THAT'S HARD TO SWALLOW
By Clare Masters, www.news.com.au

Nov 6 - COULD the greatest child abuse of our time be the fattening of
a generation?

What chance does a child - offered a steady stream of fast food - have
to grow up to be a healthy weight?

Sydney University's Dr Michael Booth, the state's top expert on
childhood obesity, says although the issue involves several shades of
grey, a diet of junk food could easily be considered a form of abuse.

"It is actually doing their life's chances very great harm," he said.

"Failing to provide adequate nourishment to your children is a form of
abuse, like failing to provide adequate shelter or education or sleep
or safety."

HOSPITAL BANS JUNK FOOD

Nov 6 - A CHILDREN'S hospital in WA has become the first in the state
to ban junk food from its cafeteria and vending machines.

"Hospitals are places where sick people go to get healthy so it seems
only logical that they sell healthy food," [State Health Minister Jim]
McGinty said.

THAI ELEPHANTS TOUCH DOWN

Nov 5 - FOUR more elephants have arrived in Australia today, bound for
local zoos after a controversial journey from Thailand.

The elephants touched down this morning in Sydney, where one will be
transferred to the city's Taronga Zoo, before their chartered Russian
plane heads to Avalon Airport near Melbourne, to drop off another
three this afternoon for Melbourne Zoo.

The male elephant being taken to Taronga Zoo is called Gung - meaning
"prawn" and will rejoin four females from his herd who arrived on
Thursday.

The elephants are part of a group of eight that finally left Thailand
in June, after court battles from animal rights protesters in
Australia and overseas caused their journey to be delayed.

They have been held in quarantine on the Cocos Islands, about 2,800km
north-west of Perth, for the past three months and are coming to
Australia for a breeding program.

Zoos Victoria chief Laura Mumaw said in a statement that the three
elephants going to Melbourne would help ensure the species' survival.

"We are very excited to be welcoming the three new members of our
elephant family as part of the Australasian zoos' conservation
breeding program," she said.

The three elephants heading to Melbourne - Dokkoon, Kulab and Num-Oi -
are all females, who will form a social group with two other elephants
already at the zoo.

The RSPCA has opposed the decision to bring the elephants to Australia
because of concerns for their welfare.

RSPCA Victoria president Dr Hugh Wirth has said the weight of
scientific evidence goes against the decision by Environment Minister
Ian Campbell to allow their importation.

"In allowing this importation to proceed, Minister Ian Campbell and
the zoos involved have condemned these elephants to a life of
suffering in captivity," Dr Wirth said recently.

Despite more than 100 years of keeping elephants captive, Australian
zoos have never bred an Asian elephant.

"The elephant is a precious and endangered animal, not a tourist
attraction," Dr Wirth said.

"Taking elephants away from their home and family groups in Thailand,
and sticking them in a zoo in Melbourne, is no way to contribute to
elephant conservation."

But Mark Williams from Taronga Zoo scorned such suggestions.

"That is absolute nonsense. They have been cared for the whole way.
They have been looked after to world's best practice," Mr Williams said.

ELEPHANTS SETTLE TO SOUNDS OF MELBOURNE

Nov 6 - The three females - Num-Oi, five, Kulab, seven, and Dokkoon,
13 - flew into Melbourne on Sunday after a 20-hour journey from the
Cocos Islands, where they spent months in quarantine following a
controversial journey from Thailand.

Zoo program development manager Laurie Pond spent the night with the
pachyderms and told of the trio's nervous introduction to the sounds
of Melbourne.

"I slept in the barn overnight and they were a little bit scared - we
had a possum which terrorised us all a little bit over the night," he
said.

Passing trams and other city sounds also took some getting used to.

"It's a little bit noisy but they'll get used to all these noises,"
said Mr Pond.

In time, the group will be introduced to Melbourne Zoo's other
elephants - a female, Mek Kapah, and Bong Su, a male, as part of a zoo
conservation breeding program.

For Mek Kapah it will be her first contact with other female elephants
in 25 years.

APPROVAL SOUGHT FOR HUMAN/ANIMAL EMBRYOS
By Patricia Reaney in London, www.news.com.au

Nov 7 - SCIENTISTS in Britain have applied for a licence to create
hybrid embryos using human cells and animal eggs for stem cell
research to develop new treatments for diseases such as Parkinson's,
stroke and Alzheimer's.

The researchers from Kings College London and the North East England
Stem Cell Institute (NESCI) submitted the application to the Human
Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), a regulatory body that
oversees embryo research and fertility treatment.

If the application is approved, the hybrid embryo will be 99.9 per
cent human and 0.1 per cent animal. By using animal eggs, the
scientists hope to overcome the shortage of human eggs left over from
IVF treatments, which have been used for stem cell research.

"Our research team at King's College London is optimistic that the
HFEA will rule favourably on our licence application," said Dr Stephen
Minger, director of the Stem Cell Biology Laboratory at Kings College.

"We feel that the development of disease-specific human embryonic stem
cell lines from individuals suffering from genetic forms of
neurodegenerative disorders will stimulate both basic research and the
development of new treatments for these devastating brain diseases."

The HFEA said today it had not received the application yet. It will
be peer-reviewed by a panel of experts. A decision could take several
months.

"The government's consultation on fertility laws shows there is a
strong current of public concern on this," a spokesman for the HFEA said.

Other scientists welcomed the application, saying it was a rational
next step in stem cell research.

"To achieve this kind of reprogramming will be a key step for
regenerative medicine. Using animal eggs instead of human ones is a
sensible and practical approach which will accelerate progress," said
Dr Wolf Reik of the Babraham Institute in England.

The scientists said they intend to initially use cow eggs in the
research, which will attempt to grow new tissue genetically matched to
patients from stem cells.

They will use nuclear transfer, the technique used to create Dolly the
sheep, the world's first cloned mammal. The nucleus of the animal egg
will be removed and fused with the nucleus from a human cell. The egg
will develop until it is a cluster of cells, or blastocyst.

After six days, the scientists will remove the stem cells, which can
develop into any cell type or tissue. The early embryo will be
destroyed before it is 14 days old in accordance with the licence.

"We are very hopeful that the HFEA will grant us permission for this
work, which will help us to understand more about how cells behave
after the nuclear transfer process," said Dr Lyle Armstrong of NESCI.

VETS PREPARE TO TACKLE STOWAWAY MONKEY

Nov 7 - A VETERINARIAN and animal handlers will board a Chinese cargo
ship when it arrives in Sydney this week to try to catch a monkey
running loose on the vessel.

Crew on the freighter spotted the monkey sitting on top of a container
last week and reported it to the Australian Quarantine and Inspection
Service (AQIS).

Australian quarantine authorities have warned the Chinese ship it will
not be allowed to dock unless the monkey is caught or "dealt with" in
an appropriate - and humane - manner.

The crew managed to take some blurry photos of the animal that were
passed on to Taronga Zoo, with experts tentatively identifying it as a
rhesus macaque monkey.

The monkey has not been seen for almost three days and the ships' crew
believe it has probably died.

"We are probably dealing with a threat that is no longer viable," an
AQIS spokesman said.

"(But) we are not making any assumptions just yet."

The crew have left food out for the monkey in a bid to tempt it out
into the open.

A spokesman for AQIS said the ship would be directed to a buoy off
Sydney where quarantine agents, vets and animal handlers would board
the vessel to try to catch the monkey.

The ship is expected to arrive in Australian waters on Thursday or Friday.

The agency would not name the vessel.

The AQIS spokesman said it was fairly common for animals to
mysteriously appear aboard incoming cargo ships, though a stow-away
monkey was highly unusual.

"We've had dogs, cats, bats ... we certainly don't get many monkeys,"
the spokesman said.

Quarantine officials fear the monkey could be carrying rabies or other
diseases.

A spokeswoman for the RSPCA said yesterday she hoped the animal would
be dealt with in a humane manner and asked that proper checks be put
in place to stop other monkeys hitching rides to Australian.

SURFING COW DROWNS AFTER 4-HOUR SWIM
By Jessica Marszalek, www.news.com.au

Nov 7 - A COW has gone for a four-hour swim in the surf in a bizarre
bovine spectacle before drowning off Queensland's coast.

The two-year-old Brahman-cross escaped from a nearby paddock during a
muster at Elliott Heads, near Bundaberg, on Sunday and travelled 2km
to where it was spotted by beachgoers paddling 300m out to sea.

Owner Neville Atkinson said when police phoned him to report his
missing cow had been sighted swimming in the ocean it was the
strangest thing he had ever heard.

"She jumped through the fence and raced down towards the ocean and
that was the last they (the drovers) saw of her," Mr Atkinson said.

"We searched all along the ocean front ... well, we didn't look in the
water, we didn't expect her to be in the water.

"She was probably a bit upset from the morning chase but why she went
in the water I'll never know."

A crowd of more than 100 were drawn to the beach as word spread about
the body surfing cow, which swam for three hours, coming to shore
twice before returning to the waves.

Mr Atkinson and a friend eventually took a tinnie out to try to rescue
the cow which was paddling in water around 7m deep but could not bring
her to land.

She eventually drowned from swallowing water.

University of Queensland school of animal studies lecturer John
Gaughan said it was the first time in 20 years he had heard of such
strange behaviour.

Dr Gaughan, who researches cattle heat stress, said cows were good
swimmers and often waded out into dams.

But he said to swim in the ocean for that long was bizarre.

"If it was very hot it might have been just trying to cool off but
it's unusual behaviour to actually go out and start swimming around
the ocean," he said.

"It is unusual, I've never seen anything like that."

FEARS FOREST BURNING THREATENING WILDLIFE

Nov 1 - Wildlife carers at Nannup are calling on WA's Department of
Environment and Conservation to stop or modify its plans to carry out
prescribed burning in a forest home to endangered animals.

The Helms Forest is being logged by the Forest Products Commission,
and the department plans to burn the remaining 3,500 hectares this spring.

Wildlife carer Dave Paterson says while nothing can be done to stop
the logging, burning will further threaten the existence of wildlife,
in particular the black cockatoo.

The Department of Environment and Conservation says the burning is
important as it is close to the town of Jalbarragup and will provide
protection for local residents.

TRI-NATIONS US LAMB PROMOTION 'HUGE BREAKTHROUGH'
By Marius Cuming, www.farmonline.com.au

Nov 1 - Australia, New Zealand and America have united to promote lamb
together in the US.

A thrilled Meat and Livestock Australia managing director, David
Palmer, announced the breakthrough earlier this week, three years
after the tri-nations group was formed.

"Everyone is chipping in equal funding for a nutritionally based
program worth about $A650,000 to lift the overall consumption of lamb
in the massive US market.

"This is a huge breakthrough for us," Mr Palmer said.

Having been the MLA's regional manager for North America, he has been
frustrated by the lack of headway lamb has made into a market that
shows such potential for lamb.

Much of the gain Australian lamb has enjoyed in the United States in
recent years has been due to the falling domestic production in that
market with Australian lamb mostly replacing dwindling US product.

Mr Palmer said the US industry had studied the MLA campaigns that have
lifted domestic demand here in Australia and were impressed with the
results.

The focus of the campaign is health, with dieticians, health
professionals and peer reviews set to form a major part of the
literature that will be aimed at well educated, moderate to high
earning professionals.

ANIMAL WELFARE COMMUNICATIONS STRATEGY UPGRADE

Nov 2 - A national communications strategy on animal welfare issues,
including a dedicated website, will be developed over the next six
months to raise awareness levels in the general community.

Agriculture Minister, Peter McGauran, said Australia could be proud of
its animal welfare record, but was determined not to rest on its laurels.

Mr McGauran was speaking following a meeting of government, industry
and community representatives involved in the Australian Animal
Welfare Strategy.

"The public rightly demands the highest standards of animal welfare,"
he said.

"Australia already leads the world in animal welfare practices and our
farmers are constantly improving the way they raise their animals.

"It is essential that the general public understands the importance
farmers place on this issue and the work that is continuing in this
critical area.

"Research has found there is a need to provide the public with
balanced information and that the Government has a role in this process."

The communications strategy will include a dedicated animal welfare
website to provide information such as national codes of practice.

Mr McGauran reiterated his push for State and Territory governments to
review their animal welfare legislation to provide consistency across
Australia.

"Farmers and other stakeholders want a consistent approach to animal
welfare," he said.

"The Government is also considering ways to strengthen national
legislation to counter the destructive impact animal activists have on
farming practices.

"Australian farmers operate legitimate businesses.

"They need to be protected from extreme groups whose unlawful
trespassing often creates a biosecurity risk."

WA CATTLE NUMBERS BUILDING UP IN PADDOCKS

Nov 3 - Cattle numbers are building up in parched Western Australian
paddocks, as drought-stricken farmers are unable to shift stock due to
a shortage of kill space at local abattoirs.

WA farmers fear the problem with excess cattle numbers has reached a
new crisis point, and if something is not done soon the effect could
push prices down.

Pastoralists and Graziers Association livestock chairman, Tim D'Arcy,
says the kill space shortage is forcing prices down and putting
significant pressure on the industry.

Mr D'Arcy says a hot spell could have a devastating effect as farmers
have too many cattle stacked up and a low supply of feed.

"The feed shortage is responsible for the overload of stock because
farmers are pushing to get their cattle killed," Mr D'Arcy said.

TASSIE DEVIL RELOCATION PLAN GAINS TENTATIVE SUPPORT

Nov 3 - Plans to put tasmanian devils back on the mainland to control
feral animals have received limited support.

One of the country's leading ecologists, professor David Lindenmayer,
says devils lived in many parts of Australia before dingoes were
introduced.

"It's a reasonable idea to think about putting tasmanian devils back
onto the mainland because they were here up until very recently,"
Professor Lindenmayer said.

He says it is a good idea in principle but any moves to put devils
back on the mainland must be well thought out.

"It's got to have good science behind it, got to have good management
behind it and it's got to be resourced appropriately," he said.

"You can't just sail a ship across from Tasmania to the mainland and
then dump these things out the door and expect it to be a success -
[you've] got to think this thing through properly or it could go
pear-shaped."

To whom it might concern,

The following is a letter from Jill Robinson, founder and CEO of Animals Asian Foundation, to the Mayor of Beijing. ( Translated back into English from the Chinese version of the letter)

Dear Mayor Mr. Wang Qishan

We have heard about Beijing’s recent massive dog cull targeting at big breed dogs and unregistered dogs. We also received letters as well as phone calls from many Beijing dog keepers who expressed their concern over their dogs. We feel shocked and sad upon hearing this. As the representative of Animals Asian Foundation, I hope Beijing municipal government could give more consideration to the feelings of dog keepers and dog lovers all over the world and find a more effective way to manage the dogs in Beijing.

Animals Asian Foundation represents the animal welfare supporters all over the world, supporting the government in protecting wild and domestic animals and in formulating legislations against animal abuse and cruelty. We understand your concern over lupomania.

However, according to what we have heard, the actions Beijing municipal government is about to take will decimate not only the large breed dogs but many small ones only because they exceed the one family one dog quota. As the capital of China and the host city of 2008 Olympic Game, such brutal way of handling dogs will only tar the international image Beijing has.

Dogs have been more and more recognized by society as valuable members. Especially in today’s society, many couple who choose not to have children and aged people living by themselves see their dogs as their dearest companion and emotional support. In fact, a Beijing dog keeper told us over the phone that they moved to Beijing from other provinces and they didn’t have child yet. They viewed their dog as a family member. Another dog keeper said as a single child born in 1980s, they seek emotional support and invaluable comfort from their dogs. Only because their dogs exceed the size rule, they have to be separated with their guardians. This will be a very difficult decision for many families.

Though we understand the government’s concern over city environment and disease control, and the necessity to manage the dogs in Beijing , we suggest a more effective, scientific and human way to deal with it. It is proven in many places in the world that lupomania could be controlled by taking vaccination shots or de-sexing dogs. The government could also launch an education campaign to educate some of the uncivilized dog keepers. As a Hong Kong based animal welfare group, we are more than willing to offer our support and assistance in this area.

Keeping pet is an irreversible trend in today’s world. People can afford to keep pets and they need pets as their companion. Dogs have long been accepted by human society. Dogs are not only pets that can support their guarding family emotionally, but can improve people’s health. They play other wonderful and important roles in our society, such as guiding the blind, helping people with hearing difficulties, helping the police. Their smart noses can detect hidden bombs, drugs and prohibited wild animals; they are also used to find survivors of natural disasters.

Many large breed dogs such as Saint Bernard, golden retriever are actually mild tempered. They can provide good service for the blind and people with special needs. They are also wonderful family dogs. Many large breed dogs work as Dr. Dog in the Dr. Dog project launched by Animals Asian Foundation. Not so long ago a box success Laporlado Q also featured a large breed laporlado dog. We recommend Chinese government to give more consideration when formulating dog keeping rules and learn from other countries who ban dogs based on the species’ traits instead of simply by size.

More academic groups and more average people have started to respect animal rights. There are also more animal welfare organizations mushrooming in China. You must have learnt already that when Mou Ding county’s dog killing was exposed on the internet, numerous dog loving individuals as well as organizations have expressed their rage towards such atrocities. Many media outlets also criticized the barbaric practice.

We strongly recommend Beijing municipal government to adopt more humane and scientific measures to prevent the spread of lupomania and solve dog-related social issues. Beijing government could also learn from other Asian countries to provide more comprehensive protections to the animals and educate the public on topics such as the prevention of lupomania and management of stray dogs and cats. Dog keepers should also be encouraged to take responsibilities. Animals Asian Foundation and other animal welfare organizations will all be very happy to cooperate with relevant Chinese government organizations.

Animals Asian Foundation is a Hong Kong based Non-for-Profit animal welfare organization, who is engaged in stopping the bear bile practice in Si Chuan with the help of China Wild Animal Protection Association and Si Chuan Forestry Bureau. Last year we successfully launched Dr. Dog program in Cheng Du. We have been paying close attention to the animal welfare in China and received extensive support from Chinese media and public.

We sincerely hope that relevant government organizations could have more understanding and fully respect the companion animals’ rights when regulating Beijing’s dogs to create a truly harmonious society.

ANIMALS AND SOCIETY II: CONSIDERING ANIMALS
Hobart, Tasmania; Australia, 3-6 July 2007
http://www.cdesign.com.au/AS2007

Following on the success of the inaugural Animals and Society
Conference
held at the University of Western Australia in 2005, the Animals and
Society Study Group (Australia) and the University of Tasmania are
pleased to be hosting Animals and Society II: Considering Animals.

The conference aims to bring together researchers from a broad range
of academic disciplines spanning the humanities, social sciences and
physical sciences, as well as representatives from non-government
organisations, industry and government, to examine the relationships
between animals and humans from social, cultural, historical,
geographical, environmental, moral, legal and political
perspectives.

The burgeoning academic field of human-animal studies is rapidly
gaining international prominence. Considering Animals provides an important
opportunity for researchers to share knowledge and experience in
this exciting field and will encourage a critical approach to our
relations with non-human animals. We see this conference as consolidating the
field of human-animal studies in Australia and particularly welcome
contributions from new disciplinary areas.

Keynote speakers: Steve Baker, Helen Tiffin, Adrian Franklin, Tim
Low. Papers are invited on topics addressing human-animal relations,
particularly those relating to one or more of the areas listed
below:

- animals in human histories, humans in animal histories

- animal agency and performativity

- animals out of place, wildlife in the city

- wild, domesticated, native, introduced, companion animals

- animals at work, animals in sport

- animals and ethics, religion, politics, law

- human health, animal health, veterinary and medical science

- zoos, circuses and rodeos

- extinction, experimentation, modification, management of animals

landmark day for animals, voters in Arizona and Michigan cast their ballots in favor of animals on Election Day.

Your HSUS has been a leader in passing ballot initiatives in past years to ban cockfighting, steel-jawed leghold traps and other body-gripping traps, bear baiting, hound hunting, and gestation crates. Now, we have achieved two remarkable wins for animals that will affect the lives of millions of animals, and we are so grateful to the people of Arizona and Michigan for leading the way and to our supporters who make our work possible.

Michigan voters stepped up for mourning doves, crushing Proposal 3 on the ballot and restoring the 100-year tradition of protecting the state's official bird of peace from target shooting. The vote was 68 percent to 32 percent. The Humane Society of the United States spearheaded the effort to protect mourning doves, from garnering more than 1,000 endorsements to relentlessly canvassing the state in support of the issue. Michigan voters listened, and the gentle backyard songbird will remain safe from target shooters.

In Arizona, humane treatment of farm animals won the day when voters cast their ballot in favor of Proposition 204, which bans gestation crates for breeding pigs and veal crates for young calves. Agribusiness and other special interests spent $2.5 million to defeat Proposition 204. It is the second state in the nation to ban gestation crates and the first state to ban veal crates. The vote was 61 percent in favor and only 39 percent opposed.

QUEENSLAND BANS DUCK AND QUAIL HUNTING

The Queensland Government tonight passed laws banning recreational duck and quail hunting.

Environment Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr told State Parliament the shooting of ducks and quail for sport was not an appropriate recreational activity in this day and age.

“While it may once have been acceptable, community attitudes have changed and combined with environmental concerns, it has reached a stage where it is time to make a permanent decision about this practice,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.

“The new laws follow findings by the Animal Welfare Advisory Committee that the wounding rates in hunting these animals was unacceptably high.

“The committee found that up to 90 per cent of birds shot were not killed outright.”

Ms Nelson-Carr said the laws would not impact on the existing rights of landholders to protect their crops from damage should they need to, nor did it impact on the traditional hunting rights of indigenous Queenslanders.

“This Bill also does not prevent recreational shooters from targeting feral animals such as pigs or rabbits which cause economic and environmental harm,” she said.

Ms Nelson-Carr said community feedback indicated that many people in the community saw the practice as barbaric and outdated.

In 2004, the last declared season in which duck and quail hunting was permitted, only 374 permits were issued while 20 years ago, in 1984, 1800 permits were issued

INTERNATIONAL MOVEMENT AGAINST BULLFIGHTS
www.iwab.org
IMAB@iwab.org

Dear Friends,

Once again the bullfighters are trying to expand their bloody business
to China. In 2004 they managed to hold a bullfight in Shanghai. In
2005 they tried to hold one in Chengdu without success.

According to news published in a Mexican newspaper the bulls will be
shipped on the 13th of this month (Nov) to Chengdu. Others will be
shipped 16th or 17th. These bulls will be used in bullfights in
Chengdu and Shanghai.

The article does not refer the dates in which these bullfights will
take place, (below the article in Spanish).

According to an article of today (below in Spanish also) one of the
bullfights will be held next 18th in Chongqing.

It's very important to prevent these bullfights, we must do it at all
costs. We cannot allow that these mafia expand their business of
torture to other countries.

Please send the sample letter (try to write a different one) to the
following authorities and embassies (please write only to the Embassy
of your country or to the nearest one).

Honorable Officials of China,

Through a Mexican newspaper we took knowledge that bulls are being
sent to China for bullfights that will take place in Chengdu and Shanghai.

The referred source states that the bulls will leave Mexico on the
13th of this month and their destination is Chengdu.

I don't have any motives to distrust a news from a Mexican newspaper.

It's unbelievable that despite the protests concerning the bullfight
performed in Shanghai on 2004, your country persists in importing
barbaric spectacles that are unacceptable by the majority of countries
that already have them.

I am sure that the majority of the Chinese people do not approve of
these kind of spectacles where animals are tortured in the name of
entertainment.

I ask you to forbid these bullfights and legislate in order to protect
not only the animals in China but also to prevent the import of this
or other medieval spectacles like bullfights.

Yours sincerely

ELECTION '06: ANIMALS WIN IN ARIZONA AND MICHIGAN (USA)

Voters in Arizona and Michigan gave a voice to animals this year by
speaking out on ballot initiatives in landslide votes that will
protect farm animals and mourning doves.

Arizona voters overwhelmingly passed a historic initiative to improve
the lives of farm animals-the Humane Treatment for Farm Animals Act.

The passage of this proposition-by more than 60 percent-makes Arizona
the first state in the nation to prohibit the confinement of calves in
veal crates and the second state to prohibit the confinement of
breeding pigs in gestation crates. These two factory farming practices
are infamous for their inherent cruelty and are both already banned
throughout the European Union.

"Arizona voters stood up to factory farming lobby groups and affirmed
that farm animals should have basic protections such as being able to
turn around and extend their limbs," said Wayne Pacelle, HSUS
president and CEO. "The overwhelming passage of Proposition 204 will
not only help thousands of animals in Arizona, but will also send a
message to factory farming operations across the country that they
must end the most abusive practices."

VEGAN VANDAL ON RAMPAGE
By Amy Remeikis, www.sunshinecoastdaily.com.au

Nov 7 - A "VEGAN vandal" has gone on the attack, using words and
stones as his weapons of choice.

Maroochydore butcher shop Meatworld and their seafood offshoot,
Fishworld felt the brunt of the animal activist's ire over the
weekend, with senior butcher Anthony Tomkins turning up to work early
Sunday morning to be greeted by the words "meat = murder".

The vandal had several other messages he wanted to get across and also
smashed Meatworlds front windows with bricks and stones, causing more
damage by striking a display of free range eggs which was resting by
the window.

Mr Tomkins said the culprit attempted to cover their tracks by
covering three of the security camera lenses with spray paint, but
images of the cloaked bandit have been handed over to police.

"It's frustrating, for both our staff and our clients," he said.

"Our customers have had to come in here and be faced with that and we
are trying to run a business here and it puts a damper on the day for
our staff when they see that as well. It makes them feel frustrated,
angry and annoyed that people can just do this."

Police are investigating whether the Meatworld vandal is also
responsible for the message "eat more greens" spray painted on a fence
along Maroochydore Road.

While not going as far as to condone the behaviour, Animal Activist
Queensland's Karen Nilsen sympathised with the vandal's message.

"Anyone who has attempted to comprehend the violence and needless
slaughter of 55 billion animals every year will realise that these
actions are committed out of outrage and sheer frustration," she said.

"By comparison, the causeless violence committed by the meat industry
is overwhelming yet often overlooked.

TENNIS ICON SLAMS 'GAY SHEEP' EXPERIMENTS

Openly-lesbian tennis icon Martina Navratilova has condemned
hormone-altering experiments on "gay sheep" at Oregon State University
(OSU) and Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU).

The American research seeks to manipulate sheep's sexual preferences
and make them heterosexual. American taxpayers fund the tests until 2008.

In letters faxed to the presidents of both universities, Navratilova
writes:

"How can it be that, in the year 2006, a major university would host
such homophobic and cruel experiments? ... I respectfully ask that you
pull the plug on this appalling and misguided research.

"Surely you can find a way to redirect the millions of public tax
dollars that are being wasted on these experiments to a more fruitful
venture-perhaps by funding a gay and lesbian community center to
foster dialogue and acceptance for people of all sexual preferences?"

According to animal rights group PETA, OHSU experimenter Charles
Roselli is medicating sheep to prevent the actions of hormones in
sheep's fetal brains.

Roselli is also dissecting the brains of "male-oriented" (homosexual)
rams in order to find the hormonal mechanisms behind homosexual
tendencies. Once found, he hopes to change them.

According to the grant applications, the experimenters plan to
extrapolate the test results to humans-with the insidious implication
that homosexuality in people can be "cured."

Navratilova-who has won nine Wimbledon Women's Singles championships
and, with a record 167 titles in singles and 174 in doubles, holds
more overall tennis titles than any other player in history-adds:

"For the sake of the animals who will die unnecessarily in these
experiments and for the many gays and lesbians who stand to be deeply
offended by the social implications of these tests, I ask that you
please end these studies at once."

WOOL GROWER WANTS MULESING TRIAL MONEY REDIRECTED

Nov 9 - Wool growers are being urged to start breeding so-called
bare-bum sheep now to stave off future controversy over surgical mulesing.

The industry has vowed to phase out mulesing by 2010 to placate animal
welfare groups.

Dubbo grazier Don Mudford is already breeding sheep that do not need
mulesing and believes the industry should be spending more money on
marketing, instead of searching for mulesing alternatives.

"Because the day will come whether it's in three years or not, the day
will come when they won't be able to mules but to stop mulesing the
whole flock will take a few years," he said.

"But people need to start now and a lot of flock breeders would have
the ewes there now."

WA EXPORT HOLDING YARDS BREACHING STANDARDS: RSPCA

Nov 7 - The RSPCA says most live export holding yards in Western
Australia breach new national quarantine standards.

The animal welfare body is investigating what it says is a lack of
shelter at one of the state's biggest ports at Wyndham.

It says cattle, goats and pigs are forced to stand in temperatures of
more than 40 degrees for up to three days without shade.

Since the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS)
standards are not enforceable, the RSPCA wants the owner of the yards,
the Ord River District Co-operative, to provide shelter.

But spokesman Jim Hughes says that is unlikely to happen.

Mr Hughes says the facilities are not part of their core business and
they do not receive enough rent to warrant upgrading the 80-year-old
yards.

"What we get for those cattle yards is no more than a donation," he said.

"In those circumstances why on earth would we want to spend a lot of
money on facilities at the yard?"

The new AQIS export standards state registered premises must provide
animals with protection from extreme climatic conditions.

But RSPCA prosecutor Robin Moore says he was told the standards are
not enforceable.

He says an AQIS vet made the point that no where else has shelter and
that it is an unnecessary standard for them.

DOGGED RSPCA IN CASH CRISIS

Nov 7 - THE country's peak animal welfare body has urged governments
to re-prioritise budgets to include extra funding for animal welfare
groups struggling to maintain shelters for abandoned and lost pets

Staff and volunteers say they are being forced to work in sub-standard
conditions because they do not have money to make improvements.

Nationwide, the various governments provide only three per cent of the
RSPCA's total funding, an amount the organisation today described as
"tokenism".

One of the most dire shelters is Queensland's RSPCA headquarters at
Fairfield in Brisbane's south, which staff say is "falling down around
their ears".

RSPCA spokesman Michael Beatty said maggot-infested dead rats have
fallen from the ceilings, stagnate water in blocked drains is causing
animals to fall ill, and most of the pens need rebuilding.

"To properly fix the shelter would cost $10 million but without a
shadow of a doubt the best option is to build a new one because it's
just that bad," he said.

He said the Queensland government agreed to this proposal four years
ago, but has so far failed to make the new premises a reality.

A spokesman for state treasurer Anna Bligh has indicated they will
make a decision before Christmas, but Mr Beatty is not convinced.

"Until they make a decision we can't afford to spend money fixing
something that will probably be destroyed anyway."

It's a plea echoed around the country.

One RSPCA shelter in Canberra, which was destroyed in the 2003
bushfires, has been partially rebuilt, but many of the animals are
still housed in buildings that have insufficient heating, cooling or
lighting.

"I suspect the roof is probably full of asbestos as well, and I'm
working out of a demountable propped up on bricks," said RSPCA ACT CEO
Michael Linke.

He said the ACT government has earmarked a new site, but has not
provided any money to make the move possible.

"We're not as desperate as Fairfield, but something needs to happen
soon," Mr Linke said.

"We will probably have to rely on corporate sponsors because animal
charities right around the country cop a raw deal from the government."

New shelters are currently being built in stages in Wollongong,
Newcastle and Sydney, but the RSPCA has relied almost entirely on
public benevolence to get them up and running.

VETS READY TO HELP DURING DROUGHT

Nov 6 - Veterinarians stand ready to assist government agencies to
help mitigate animal welfare catastrophes during the drought,
according to the Australian Veterinary Association.

AVA president, Dr Kersti Seksel, says the network of country
veterinarians with practical expertise, extensive local knowledge, are
available to provide advice to farmers.

"As well as causing a great deal of hardship for people in farming
communities, drought is without doubt the most significant animal
welfare issue facing Australia," Dr Seksel said.

"Drought not only affects millions of livestock, but countless native
animals as well.

"Financial support may be required to ensure the best welfare outcomes
for livestock, whether that involves providing feed, transport, or
humane culling programs."

The AVA expects that as well as financial support, governments will
provide counselling for those that that rely primarily on agricultural
production for their income.

"The AVA is actively working with livestock industries to assist with
drought plans," she said.

"Our concern is that animals should not be left to starve if feed is
not available. Animals in this situation may need to be humanely
destroyed."

HOWARD BACKS DRAINING WETLANDS

Nov 8 - Prime Minister John Howard says he will support the draining
of wetlands to provide water to drought-stricken communities in the
parched Murray-Darling Basin.

Mr Howard made it clear that the needs of communities would be given
priority over the environment as governments consider how to tackle
the drastic water shortage.

"The first priority is to make sure there is water supply for people -
for communities and towns," he told reporters.

"I will just have to weather any backlash from anybody on that issue.

SUPPLY SHORTAGES FELT IN PIG MEAT INDUSTRY

Nov 8 - Competition between pig meat processors is heating up in the
lead up to Christmas because of supply shortages.

As a result the market has risen to record highs this week, with
liveweight prices as high as $3.20 per kilogram.

Greg Richter from Primo Meats at Port Wakefield, in South Australia,
says the shortage has been caused by hot conditions last summer.

"There's been a bit of a general infertility problem that happened
earlier in the year and that's just starting to come through now, it
always shows up about nine months after they have the problem," he said.

"It's a general thing every year but we had a lot of extra hot weather
and that affects the fertility of the sows, although we are now just
at the stage now where we probably expect that that would be about to
turn around and we would start to get better numbers just coming into
the Christmas."

GRAIN-FED CATTLE NUMBERS DOWN

Nov 8 - The number of grain-fed cattle in Australia fell by nearly
60,000 head in the last quarter, due to skyrocketing grain prices and
the worsening drought.

Figures from the Australian Lot Feeders Associations show a drop in
total numbers from 940,000 to just over 880,000, with the biggest drop
in Queensland.

Association president Malcolm Foster says South Australia was the only
state to buck the trend, with numbers jumping 10,000 to 27,000.

CALICIVIRUS HAVING AN IMPACT AROUND ALICE

Nov 8 - Research is showing that a re-release of the rabbit killing
calicivirus is having an effect near Alice Springs.

Rabbit numbers have increased dramatically in recent years, amid fears
the disease is losing its effectiveness.

Kym Schwartzkopff from Parks and Wildlife says a number of rabbits
have died since the re-release, but the disease has not spread as far
as hoped.

"The main stop of the spread is usually caused through weather, it
does seem to work a lot better within a mild climate where it's a lot
cooler and a bit more humidity around and a bit more moisture around
and the high temperatures that we have in the centre of Australia and
also through the desert regions make it go dormant.

"We're actually into our wet season now, so if the rains do continue
and we start getting a bit of moisture around it could actually move,
maybe not as fast as we thought it might have done, but just move
slowly along the range."

EXPERT WANTS DINGO CONTROLS RELAXED

Nov 6 - There has been a call to relax controls on dingoes and even
reintroduce them in some parts of Australia.

In a new book, Professor Chris Johnson of James Cook University says
it is important to conserve the pure-bred dingo.

He says he understands the damage wild dogs cause to livestock but
argues the dingo is a natural predator of other ferals.

"Reintroduction might be important in some places but of course we
still have dingoes so what I would argue for is respecting their role
in the ecosystem and relaxing control on them because I think they are
an important species for sustaining biodiversity," he said.

RARE TIGER KILLED IN TRAP

Nov 7 - A RARE female Sumatran tiger died after being caught in a trap
set up by Indonesian villagers in West Sumatra to capture wild boars,
a report said today.

The tiger, about three years old, was found still alive but bleeding
badly after one of its legs was caught in the trap set near Nagari
Cumateh, in the Pesisir Selatan district of West Sumatra early
yesterday, the state Antara news agency said.

It died before officials from the local nature conservancy office
could arrive, following reports from local villagers.

Hart Lamer Susetyo, the head of the West Sumatra Nature Conservancy
Office, said the tiger was the fifth to have been killed in the
province this year.

The Sumatran tiger is an endangered species and less than 500 of them
are believed to exist in the thick jungles across Sumatra Island.

CHINA LAUNCHES 'ONE DOG' POLICY
>From correspondents in Beijing,
www.news.com.au

Nov 9 - BEIJING has launched a "one dog policy" in an effort to curb a
sharp rise in rabies linked to the ballooning population of
unregistered canines.

"Each family is permitted to raise one dog," the Government said in a
website statement announcing the new policy.

"Large dogs, ferocious dogs and the unregulated raising of dogs are
not allowed."

Rabies has emerged as the biggest killer among infectious diseases in
the country over the past five months, according to the official media.

China's health ministry recorded 2254 cases in humans in the first
nine months of 2006, up 26 percent over the same period last year.

At least 318 people died from the disease in September alone, putting
rabies' deaths ahead of those caused by AIDS and Hepatitis B.

Last month China's central Government launched a massive national
campaign to register and inoculate dogs after a series of
rabies-related deaths resulted in the slaughter of hundreds of
thousands of canines.

The Beijing regulations apply only to the city centre but list
wide-ranging restrictions on dogs in public places.

Rising wealth in China has led to a boom in dog ownership, but most
dogs are unregistered and not inoculated due to high registration fees
and costly rabies shots.

Up to 150 million dogs are estimated to be unregistered and
unvaccinated in China, the China Daily reported last month, a figure
that will make efforts to wipe out rabies problematic.

Of an estimated one million dogs in Beijing, only around 450,000 were
registered, the paper said.

In the southern city of Guangzhou, only 1000 of the city's 50,000 dogs
were registered, it said.

China already implements a "one child family planning policy" aimed at
slowing the growth of its human population, which is the world's
largest at 1.3 billion people.

DOGS MAY HOLD SECRET TO LONG LIFE
>From correspondents in London,
www.news.com.au

Nov 9 - DOGS may be the secret to health and happiness because they
encouraged their owners to walk them daily whatever their mood or
circumstances, British researchers said today.

Researchers at the University of Portsmouth found that dog owners felt
obliged to walk their dogs despite bad weather or low moods, keeping
them fit and making them feel better once they were out.

The 65 dog owners interviewed for the study said dogs brought them
into contact with the owners of other dogs and bolstered their social
lives, said Sarah Knight, a doctoral student in psychology at the
university.

"The aim of the project was to look at attitudes to the management of
dog-walking, but what we found was that people really wanted to tell
us about the many benefits of walking their dogs," Ms Knight said.

Ms Knight said that many participants in the study were retired
people, including those who had been widowed or otherwise lived alone,
or were recovering from illness or operations.

She said that they discussed occasions when they had felt lonely,
isolated or depressed, and reported that their dogs helped them stay
physically fitter and helped maintain social contacts.

Younger participants discussed how dog-walking involved them more with
their families because it is an activity adults and children could share.

The research also found that parents were pleased that children would
leave behind the television and computer and get some fresh air and
exercise by walking the dog.

to be self funded, but between both QGAR and LobsA we hope
gradually to see a much larger international membership which
will mean a much greater voice f
or the animals. It will take some
time for LobsA to be established internationally, but we hope all
will join in to end animal exploitation.
